Põetaja Jenny Fields otsustab lapse saamiseks magada elu ja surma piirimail vaakuva poolsegase patsiendi tehnik-seersant Garpiga. Üheksa kuud hiljem näeb ilmavalgust T. S. Garp. See on humoorikalt siivutu lugu kuulsast emast, omamoodi feministist, ning peaaegu kuulsast pojast, keda huvitab kirjutamine, seks ja maadlus. Lugeja ette astub veidrate ja armastusväärsete tegelaste armaada, mis teeb „Garpi maailmast“ viimaste aastakümnete ühe menukaima romaani.
